Uveitis is inflammation of your uvea, the middle pigmented layer of your eye. It can happed for unknown reasons or secondary to many know conditions (ie autoimmune disease). Depending on the area of the eye affected, it can cause pain, redness, light sensitivity and even blurry vision. Uveitis can affect both eyes or just one eye at a time.
It is important to see your ophthalmologist if you experience
- Eye pain
- Red eye that last several days
- Blurred vision or new floaters
- Light sensitivity (photophobia)
- Pupil shape changes
Most cases of uveitis are idiopathic, meaning the cause is not known, but it can also be due to infection, trauma, medications or systemic diseases. Special blood work is often needed to test for underlying cause.
